Photograph of Harvey Shonen’s maternal grandparents and of their five children, taken in 1923 according to Harvey. They changed their surname to Strauss in the US. Front row from left: Ethel Strauss, approximately 10 years old (married named Ethel Roifer); Bessie Strauss, a few months old (married name Bessie Bernstein; she is the only one of the five children born in the US); Benjamin Strauss, 50 years old. Standing from the left: Fred Strauss, 18 years old (his first name before emigration was Faivel); Sarah Strauss, Harvey’s mother, around 14 years old (she changed her first name to Shirley, and her married name was Shirley Sohnen); Philip Strauss, around 20 years old (called Fiszel before migraton); Hannah Strauss nee Ovseychik, around 40 years old.

Harvey: This is the only photo of my grandparents together with all five of their children that we have, and it’s a wonderful photo. I laugh every time I see my mother’s hairdo as a 14 year old.
Incidentally, my grandmother, Hannah, sent a copy of this photo to her sister Ganessa who had moved from Oshmyany to Kungur, Russia. Ganessa’s granddaughter, who lives in Russia, has that copy.
